Gifford Landfill Project

DATE: 1994-2018

The former South Gifford Road Landfill is located along 41st Street in the Gifford Community of Indian River County.  The site is approximately 115 acres of land with portions owned by Indian River County (55 acres) and the City of Vero Beach (60 acres). From 1960 to 1977 this Site was an active landfill. In 1978, the landfill was closed and capped with soil. Since 1994, activities conducted on the County’s portion of the site include assessment, source removal, groundwater monitoring, public outreach meetings, and site redevelopment design work.

In July of 2018, under Council’s EPA Brownfields Assessment Program, a redevelopment plan was created through extensive public outreach and valuable Community input. Residents expressed interest in having amenities that would provide a regional destination for arts, nature, and events. They also wanted neighborhood assets such as a greenhouse and raised garden beds where the community could grow and sell food; outdoor pavilions; a solar panel farm; an arts center for local artists; and hiking trails.

The redevelopment plan includes phasing and cost estimates as well as an artistic rendering of the Citizens’ Conceptual Master Plan for Redevelopment.
